On February 6th, 2018 at approximately 12:59pm the Michigan City Police Department responded to a hit and run accident with injuries at the intersection of US Hwy 20 and Hitchcock St. Upon their arrival officers found two victims trapped in a heavily damaged sport utility vehicle. A preliminary investigation revealed that the SUV was traveling southbound on Hitchcock Street when it entered the intersection of US Hwy 20 and was broadsided by a westbound semi-truck which had disregarded the traffic signal. Following the impact, the semi-truck and its driver fled the scene westbound on US Hwy 20. Despite a thorough search of the area by Michigan City Police and the Porter County Sheriff’s Department the semi-truck could not be located. Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a blue or teal blue semi-tractor pulling an enclosed semi-trailer. As a result of this collision both occupants of the SUV were immediately extricated and transported to St. Anthony Hospital where they were treated for serious injuries. The Michigan City Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed this accident and can provide additional information to contact Lt. Jeff Loniewski at 219-874-3221 Ext. 1008.
