On Friday, at approximately midnight 52 year old Robert Gafeny of Georgia was driving Cadillac XTS with three occupants in the middle right lane of I-80 eastbound near the 8.8 mile marker. 40 year old Thurman E. Dockery Jr. of Gary, Indiana was driving a Chevrolet Cruze in the right lane. Mr. Gafeny then changed lanes into the right lane, and was rear ended by Mr. Dockery’s vehicle which was traveling at a high rate of speed. Mr. Dockery’s vehicle then traveled north across all lanes of travel and crashed into the inside barrier wall. Mr. Gafeny was able to pull his vehicle over onto the outside shoulder. The crash was captured on a good Samaritans dash cam who had stopped to check on the drivers. Mr. Dockery was unresponsive but breathing on scene when emergency personal arrived. Mr. Dockery was transported to Methodist Hospital in Gary, Indiana for treatment. All occupants in the Cadillac XTS refused medical treatment and were able to drive away from the scene. Further investigation found that Mr. Dockery had two outstanding nationwide warrants. It was later found that the vehicle operated by Mr. Dockery had been reported as stolen out of Chicago. Located inside the Chevrolet Cruze was drug paraphernalia and suspected controlled substances. Investigation also revealed that Mr. Dockery been operating a motor vehicle while never receiving a license. Mr. Dockery was subsequently discharged from the hospital and arrested. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
