ABC/Randy Holmes(SAN DIEGO) — Wonder Woman made a big splash at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, bringing early footage from next year’s sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, which just started shooting three weeks ago.

While the highly-anticipated film is a follow-up to the 2017 DC superhero film, star Gal Gadot told the crowd at the panel that she wouldn’t use the word sequel to explain the new film.

“It’s not a sequel. It’s its own story. It’s a different chapter. It’s a whole new movie,” she explained.

The new chapter will be set in the ’80s, while the original took place in 1917. Director Patty Jenkins explained the 67-year leap forward.

“It really was mankind at its best and worst,” Jenkins said of the 1980s. “We’re aware of the prices of some of our behavior nowadays but we weren’t in the ’80s.”.

She went on to explain that the decade also has fun things, like big hair, great music and more.

“There were a lot of elegant and beautiful and incredible things about the ’80s too,” Jenkins said. “At the same time, we were revealing the worst of us. What an interesting time to reflect on now.”

Wonder Woman 1984 is expected to premiere November 2019.
