On Tuesday, at approximately 8:51 pm, deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the intersection of US Highway 421 and County Road 800 South in reference to a crash involving a motorcycle and passenger car. Upon arrival deputies discovered that the operator of the motorcycle was deceased but the three occupants of the passenger car were uninjured. Evidence at the scene, a witness statement as well as a statement provided by the driver of the passenger car indicated that the passenger car, driven by Jennifer DeMass of rural Westville, had been traveling north on US 421. That vehicle was a Chevrolet Trail Blazer. The motorcycle, a Kawasaki VN800, had been traveling west on County Road 800 South and never slowed or stopped at the intersection of US 421 and drove into the side of the Trail Blazer. The operator of the motorcycle had not been wearing a helmet. The operator of the motorcycle has been identified as 47 year old Michael Mays of rural Michigan City. The La Porte County Coroner’s Office has ruled that Mays died from blunt force trauma. An alcohol blood test was completed and determined that Mays had a blood alcohol concentration of .15%. An alcohol test was also performed on DeMass, per Indiana Code, and her blood alcohol was .00%.
