According to a press release from the Michigan City Police, on Sunday, at about 9:15pm, the MCPD received information via social media reference a MCHS student being in possession of a handgun at school this past Friday. An investigation into the received information began immediately. School officials were notified, safety plans were initiated and additional staff was summoned to assist. Throughout the night the entire school was searched. This search utilized staff from the MCPD, MCHS and also a specialized police K-9 from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department that is trained to locate explosives. Additionally, witnesses were located and interviewed. It is important to note that no weapon was found inside of the school or on school grounds. Police and School resources remained on school grounds as an extra safety precaution as the school day began on Monday morning. Meanwhile, Investigators continued to gather information and zeroed in on a suspect. The suspect was determined to be a 17 year old MCHS student. An interview was conducted at the MCPD with the suspect and his parent who were both cooperative. Based on information learned through the course of the investigation, coupled with information learned in the interview, the 17 year old student was taken into custody and charged with Dangerous Possession of a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm on School Property. The handgun involved in this investigation was recovered at the student’s residence and is currently in police custody. MCPD said in the press release, “School Safety is paramount to everyone in the community. This matter stands as a reminder that if you see something then say something immediately. School Officials, the MCPD and all First Responders have worked seamlessly together putting plans in place to keep our schools safe”.
