The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that occurred in Galena Township along County Road 1000 North. On Tuesday, deputies from the Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to County Road 1000 North, east of Beverly Lane, in reference to a vehicle crash in which the vehicle involved was fully engulfed in flames. Deputies arrived at the scene with Kankakee Fire Department and La Porte County Emergency Medical Services and found that a single vehicle was involved in the crash and was on fire. The fire was extinguished, and it was determined that the driver had been trapped inside and was deceased. Evidence at the scene indicated that the vehicle, a Kia passenger car, had been traveling east on 1000 North and just east of Beverly Lane, left the road to the right and struck a large tree. It appeared that upon impact with the tree, the vehicle burst into flames. The vehicle continued off the road to the south, through a livestock fence, and came to rest in a pasture. Crash Reconstructionists from the Sheriff’s Office were summoned to the scene and are currently collecting evidence and reconstructing the crash. In addition, the La Porte County Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and will begin the process to identify the deceased. At the time of this release, the identity and sex of the deceased is not known. Once additional information is learned, it will be released. At the time of this release, it is not known if alcohol or drugs were involved.
