Michigan City Police officers took a 31-year-old man into custody shortly after an armed robbery occurred at the SAVE gas station located at 1811 Franklin. The suspect, Ian Ladwaune Rawls is believed to be involved in a current string of armed robberies in Michigan City and LaPorte County. As officers were dispatched to an Armed Robbery that had just occurred at the SAVE Station, a search of a possible vehicle and suspect was being conducted by assisting officers. Shortly after the search began, Officer Michael King and Officer Justin Frever, found a vehicle matching the description at the GOLO station located at Popular and Michigan. As an attempt was made to stop the vehicle Rawls fled on foot. Rawls then attempted to re-enter his vehicle and was then stopped at gunpoint and placed under arrest. The vehicle involved was impounded and secured as evidence and Rawls was taken into custody after being identified by the victim. Rawls was initially charged with Armed Robbery Level 3 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement and operating without a driver’s license.
Detective Corporal Michelle Widelski was called to the scene where she took over as the lead investigator.
A search warrant was obtained for the suspect vehicle where further evidence was located linking the suspect to the robbery. According to reports filed over the last several days, the descriptions given in an array of gas station armed robberies links the suspect and vehicle as allegedly being involved. The investigation into these cases remains on-going with further investigation and charges are pending.
