The LaPorte Police Department would like to make the community aware of an event that is scheduled to take place the morning of March 18th. The LaPorte Police Department along with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan City Police Department, LaPorte City Fire Department, Michigan City Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, LaPorte County EMA, LaPorte Community School Corporation and Michigan City School Corporation will be conducting a mock active shooter exercise at LaPorte High School. To help keep everyone safe and to prevent any confusion, I St., F St., and 6 th St. will be closed during the exercise from 7 am until approximately 12 pm. There will also be a large presence of emergency services parked on school property. The school will be closed at the time for an e-Learning Day and there will not be any students attending classes. No one will be allowed on the school property or in the building during the exercise. The purpose of this exercise is to observe and evaluate the response of first responders to an active shooter event, identify gaps, lapses, and/or needs in training, policies, procedures or resources. This will help emergency services and the LaPorte County school corporations be better prepared for a large-scale event. Police are reminding the community to not be alarmed by the increased activity around the school and remember that this is only a drill.
