Krueger Middle School students are learning that it pays to recycle. In 2019, the school won a $10,000 prize from PepsiCo Recycle Rally, after ranking ninth in the nation in the PepsiCo Recycle Rally challenge. This school year, Krueger is on track to win another big prize – and they are asking for more help from the community to make it happen. Environmental Science teacher Daisy Lee, who spearheads the project for Krueger says she is hoping more businesses and organizations will partner with them to help collect and weigh bottles and cans for the challenge. She says individuals can help, too, by collecting and dropping off these items for recycling. The school will win points in the Recycle Rally challenge based on the amount of plastic bottles and aluminum cans it can collect by April 28th. Specifically, the school is collecting plastic #1 beverage bottles, plastic milk cartons, and aluminum drink cans. Packaging cannot be from alcoholic beverages. The items can be dropped off at Krueger Middle School, Monday-Friday, 7:00am – 2:45pm. La Porte Insurance Agency (504 Pine Lake Avenue), The Elston YMCA (1202 Spring Street Door L), and Anytime Fitness (4112 Franklin Street), are also collecting items for Krueger. Last year, funds from Krueger’s Recycle Rally ninth-place finish were used to resurface and re-line Krueger’s gym floor. The school also installed a new scoreboard and purchased much-needed basketball uniforms for both the girls’ and boys’ teams. In the 2020 contest, Krueger is currently in seventh-place (from among more than 200 schools competing nationwide) and is on track to earn $20,000 for their efforts. The contest’s grand prize is $50,000. According to Lee, Krueger also is recycling a variety of additional items, many of which cannot be placed in curbside bins. A complete list of the items being collected (with specifics on preparing them for recycling) is online at educatemc.net/recycling. Lee is also seeking adult and student volunteers to assist with the effort. Teacher Daisy Lee can also give more information if needed at dlee03@mcas.k12.in.us.
